Geoexchange is how geothermal energy, generated and stored below the Earth’s surface, provides efficient and cost-effective heating, cooling, and hot water to a home or structure. Because the temperature below the surface of the earth remains constant, exchanging heat is more efficient, making geoexchange more sustainable than conventional HVAC, at a fraction of the financial and environmental cost. Known as geothermal heat pumps or ground source heat pumps, these systems use the stable temperature of the ground to store heat energy so it can be pulled back out and distributed into a building using minimal electricity.
Renewable Energy
A Growing Alternative to Resource-Heavy Waste Solutions
Zero Waste
Many international initiatives have been in place for some time to reduce the global demands of waste collection and promote wiser waste management – but one such strategy aims to eliminate the very idea of waste itself.
Fortress Power
Clean, Smart Storage for Solar Energy
Pennsylvania-based Fortress Power got its start when electrical engineer Jing Yu and longtime business manager Barry Moore decided to provide a better solar energy storage solution. The industry insiders recognized the need for a reliable battery to store solar energy produced during the day, when most people are not at home to take advantage of the power. By the time most consumers come home from work, the sun is going down and the time for harnessing solar energy is waning. “There is a need to store the excess power during the day and use it when you need it,” Yu says.
New Options in Residential Energy
Going Off the Grid
When turning off the lights every time we leave the room and doing laundry at 2 a.m. doesn’t seem to make any difference to our utility bills, energy self-sufficiency becomes more appealing. Now, after years of paying soaring household electrical bills, many homeowners dream about going off the grid.
The Bright Future of Renewable Technology
The Limit Does Not Exist
Demand for energy is unrelenting, and will only increase as populations grow. But coupled with the desire for affordable, endless energy is the need to reduce the harmful resulting emissions as well, and this is where harnessing renewable technology will be paramount.
Nuclear’s Green Reality
Powering the Future
Nuclear power. Say those words and you can conjure up all sorts of images in people, from a lethal mushroom cloud to the power source of the future.
Sustainable Forestry Practices
Into the Woods
Without forests, life on earth would cease to exist. Absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, forests are home to Indigenous persons and countless species of wildlife, and are a valuable source of wood for lumber, fuel, furniture, medicine and more.
GenPro Energy Solutions
Sustainable Energy for a Global Community
Engineering procurement construction company GenPro Energy Solutions focuses on energy efficiency and energy production in commercial, governmental and residential markets. The sustainable energy company has grown considerably over its fifteen years and now serves over two hundred energy dealers across the United States and projects around the world.
SunSpark Technology Inc.
Leading The Solar Revolution Through Technological Evolution
SunSpark Technology Inc., otherwise referred to as SunSpark USA, is a leading solar panel manufacturer that is making its mark on the North American solar market. Its mission is to make solar more accessible to consumers by sustainably producing and integrating panels in new, innovative and exciting ways.
PosiGen
Providing Valuable Savings to Families with Solar and Energy Efficiency
PosiGen provides solar and energy efficiency solutions with a unique approach. Rather than customizing solar products for individual houses, the company offers three separate sizes that work for every customer. The size of the system installed on a house is based on the consumption of energy in the home and the total roof size available considering shading issues. This method allows PosiGen to drive its cost of installing solar down lower than any other company in the industry.
Axium Solar
Running on Sunshine – Harnessing a Passion for Solar Sustainability
Long before we were dealing with serious climate change concerns and encouraging industries to “go green” around the globe, there was solar power — converting energy from sunlight into electricity, directly through the use of photovoltaics, indirectly using concentrated solar power, or a combination of both. Axium Solar specializes in the photovoltaic method, designing and constructing high-quality systems to make the world both affordable and sustainable.
Biothermic
Heating for the Long Haul
Counterintuitive as it may seem at first, wood energy is becoming one of Canada’s hottest and most affordable go-to fuels when it comes to the effective heating of indoor human habitats. A leader in this field, Biothermic brings Austrian brilliance to modern wood burning across the country.
A Look at Alternative Fuels
Life After Oil
For decades, the world’s relationship with oil has been akin to a dysfunctional marriage: some believe we can live with it, others say we should live without it.
La Granaudière
Revitalizing a Community With Renewable Energy
The La Granaudière renewable energy project is currently underway in the Saint Michel des Saints region of Québec. The project involves constructing and operating a wood pellet plant capable of producing 200,000 metric tonnes of pellets annually, to be sold primarily in Europe. After more than five years of planning, the development broke ground in September of 2019 and is expected to be complete by end of the summer of this year.
The Market for Renewables is Charged with Energy
Dollars and Sense
With an entire generation of young men and women raised on the principles of green initiatives and environmental sustainability, the desire to invest in the renewable industry is at an all-time high.
Energy Infrastructure and Storage We Can Depend On
Large and in Charge
From the batteries we use to power our smartphones to supplying fail-proof energy to data centres, hospitals and entire cities, our dependence on electricity is at an all-time high…
Steam Turbine Alternative Resources
A Turbine Manufacturer Protecting the Environment and Supporting its Community
Steam Turbine Alternative Resources (STAR) is the only family-owned and woman-owned turbine company in the United States. It manufactures replacement parts for turbines in power plants, and its precision machine shop specializes in customized billets to help improve efficiency. For individualized parts that have been worn down, STAR uses reverse engineering to determine how the part fits into the power plant and recreates it.

Pacific Ethanol
Demand-Driven Innovation
This is a truly exciting and ground-breaking time to be involved in the ethanol industry due to the continued support from the federal government’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the low carbon profile of ethanol, the relative cost of ethanol to gasoline, and the high octane rating of the fuel. Companies such as Pacific Ethanol are on the cusp of a new era. Environmental standards are taken into consideration more and more these days, and ethanol is at the forefront of these efforts.
Grasshopper Solar
Bring Solar Home
Last May, I spoke with Ontario’s largest solar provider, Grasshopper Solar of Mississauga. We discussed the residential market, the cost of solar and how the general public needs to be educated about the benefits of solar technologies. Now, we celebrate its tenth anniversary and look to President and Chief Executive Officer Azeem Qureshi for the latest developments in the solar industry and within the company itself.
